- Prehistory - 3000 BCE
- Maps predate writing. The earliest known cartographic representations are etched on cave walls, clay tablets, and stone.

- Carved into rock in the Val Camonica, Italy. Shows a network of paths, houses, fields, and irrigation channels -- a village map carved by Neolithic people. One of the oldest topographic representations.
- Babylonian Clay Tablets (~2300 BCE)

- 600 BCE - 200 CE
- The Greeks transformed mapmaking from practical record-keeping into a mathematical science. They were the first to grapple seriously with the problem of representing a sphere on a flat surface.

- 8th - 15th Century
- While Europe produced theological maps, Islamic scholars preserved and advanced Greek geographic science. They combined Ptolemy's framework with new astronomical observations, trade knowledge, and exploration.
- Al-Khwarizmi (c. 780-850)
- Corrected Ptolemy's overestimate of the Mediterranean's length. His "Book of the Form of the Earth" provided coordinates for 2,402 cities. The word "algorithm" derives from his Latinized name.
- Al-Idrisi (1100-1165)

- 3rd Century BCE - 18th Century
- Chinese cartography developed independently, achieving remarkable precision centuries before comparable European work -- with a grid-based approach rather than projection-based.
- 3rd Century CE - Pei Xiu
- "The Father of Chinese Cartography." Established six principles of mapmaking: scale, orientation, distance, elevation, right angles, and curved distances. Served as Minister of Works under the Jin Dynasty.
- 1137 CE - The Yu Ji Tu
- "Map of the Tracks of Yu" -- carved in stone, showing China's coastline and river systems on a precise grid (each square = 100 li). Remarkably accurate; some call it the most impressive map of its era worldwide.
- 1402 - Kangnido Map
- Korean world map based on Chinese sources. Shows Europe, Africa, and Arabia -- evidence that Chinese/Korean knowledge extended globally before European "discovery." Africa is recognizable despite distortion.

- 1570 - Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum

### Slide 13: The Cassini Maps of France

- 1683 - 1815
- The first large-scale, scientifically surveyed national map -- a project spanning four generations of the Cassini family and 130 years of work.
- Scale: 1:86,400. 182 sheets covering all of France. Based on triangulation -- a revolution in surveying that replaced estimation with geometry.
- 1683 - Jean-Dominique Cassini (I)
- Began triangulation of France. Used the newly invented telescope for precise astronomical positioning. Discovered that France was smaller than previously believed -- Louis XIV reportedly said the astronomers had cost him more territory than his enemies.
- 1744 - Cassini III
- Completed the triangulation framework. 800 triangles covering France. Published the first triangulation map showing the skeleton of the survey.
- 1789 - Cassini IV
- Nearly completed the detailed map when the Revolution disrupted funding. The map was eventually finished and seized as state property. Napoleon used it for military planning.

- Terra Nullius
- "Nobody's land" -- the legal fiction that territories were empty if not mapped by Europeans. Used to justify colonization of Australia, the Americas, and Africa despite millennia of indigenous habitation and their own spatial knowledge systems.
- Naming as Claiming
- Colonial cartographers renamed places in European languages, erasing indigenous toponyms. "Lake Victoria," "Rhodesia," "King Edward Point" -- each name a political act of possession written onto the landscape.
- The "Scramble for Africa"
- At the Berlin Conference (1884-85), European diplomats drew borders on maps with limited geographic knowledge. Lord Salisbury: "We have been giving away mountains and rivers and lakes to each other, only hindered by the small impediment that we never knew exactly where they were."

- 17th - 19th Century
- Cartography's scope expanded beyond coastlines and borders to visualize invisible phenomena -- disease, poverty, geology, weather, population -- transforming maps into analytical tools.
- Edmond Halley's Wind Map (1686)
- First published map of trade winds and monsoons. Used short strokes to show wind direction -- an early form of what we now call vector visualization. Halley also mapped magnetic declination (1701).
- John Snow's Cholera Map (1854)

- Preserves: Balanced compromise of area, shape, and distance. Use: National Geographic's standard since 1998. The name means "triple compromise" in German.

### Slide 19: Propaganda Maps

- Throughout history, maps have been powerful propaganda tools -- distorting reality to justify wars, territorial claims, and political ideologies.
- WWI and WWII Propaganda
- Nations published maps showing enemies as menacing octopuses with tentacles grasping territory. Germany's "Lebensraum" maps justified eastward expansion. Allied maps emphasized the threat of encirclement.
- Cold War Projections
- US maps of the Soviet Union often used polar projections -- making the USSR appear to loom over North America. Soviet maps showed capitalist nations encircling the socialist world. Choice of projection was ideological.

- Australian Aboriginal peoples mapped their continent through song -- oral "maps" encoding navigation routes, water sources, and ecological knowledge across thousands of kilometers. These predate European maps by 50,000+ years.
- Inuit Cartography
- Inuit carved three-dimensional wooden maps of coastlines -- tactile, portable, waterproof, and usable in the dark. They encoded information about currents, ice patterns, and safe harbors in ways flat maps cannot.

### Slide 25: Mapping the Unmappable

- Modern cartography extends far beyond Earth's surface -- mapping the ocean floor, other planets, the human genome, social networks, and abstract data spaces.
- Ocean Floor Mapping
- Only ~25% of the ocean floor is mapped at high resolution (as of 2024). The Seabed 2030 Project aims to map it all. We know more about the surface of Mars than our own ocean floor.
- Mars and Beyond
- NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has mapped Mars at 25 cm/pixel resolution. The Moon is mapped at 2-meter resolution. These maps guide rovers and plan future human settlements.
- Genome Mapping
- The Human Genome Project (1990-2003) "mapped" 3 billion base pairs of DNA -- using cartographic metaphors of position, distance, and territory. Gene "loci" are literally genetic locations on chromosomal maps.
- The Internet
- Network topography maps visualize the structure of the internet -- connections between servers, routing paths, cable networks. Projects like CAIDA map 70,000+ autonomous systems and their interconnections.

### Slide 26: Famous Maps That Changed History

- Waldseemuller Map (1507)
- Named "America" for the first time. Only one copy survives. Changed how Europe conceived of the world -- two new continents, not a route to Asia.
- John Snow's Cholera Map (1854)
- Proved disease could be waterborne, not airborne ("miasma"). Led to modern epidemiology and public health infrastructure. A map that saved millions of lives.
- The London Underground Map (1931)
- Harry Beck's schematic -- not geographically accurate but topologically clear -- revolutionized transit mapping worldwide. Every subway map in the world follows his design principles.
- Earthrise (1968)
- Apollo 8's photograph of Earth from the Moon -- arguably the most influential "map" ever made. Showed humanity its home as a borderless, fragile whole. Credited with catalyzing the environmental movement.
- The Pale Blue Dot (1990)
- Voyager 1's image of Earth from 6 billion km -- a pixel in a sunbeam. Carl Sagan: "Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us."

- Created the Mercator projection. Coined the word "atlas." Combined mathematician, engraver, and geographer in one. Jailed for heresy in 1544.
- Matthew Fontaine Maury (1806-1873)
- "Father of Oceanography." Created the first wind and ocean current charts. His maps reduced sailing times by weeks and saved countless lives at sea.
- Marie Tharp (1920-2006)
- Mapped the ocean floor, revealing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge -- providing the first visual evidence for plate tectonics (1957). Initially dismissed by her male colleague as "girl talk" before being vindicated.

- Maps are evolving from static representations to living, real-time digital models of reality -- raising profound questions about knowledge, privacy, and power.
- Digital Twins
- Complete 3D digital replicas of cities, updated in real-time from sensors, satellites, and IoT devices. Singapore's "Virtual Singapore" models every building, tree, and pipe for urban planning.
- AI Cartography
- Machine learning automatically interprets satellite imagery -- detecting buildings, roads, crop types, deforestation. Maps that update themselves continuously without human intervention.
- AR/VR Mapping
- Augmented reality overlays digital information on the physical world. Walking through a city, you could "see" historical buildings that no longer exist, underground infrastructure, or air quality data.
- Participatory Mapping
- Citizen science and crowd-sourced mapping (OpenStreetMap, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team) enable communities to map themselves -- a democratization unimaginable in the age of Mercator or Cassini.
