The First Cities

Mesopotamia · −3500 to −539
Between the Tigris and Euphrates a chain of city-states learned to count grain, draft contracts, and write on river clay. Uruk, perhaps the earliest true city, may have held forty thousand inhabitants by 3000 BCE — a density unprecedented in human experience. From Sumer came the wheel, the sexagesimal hour, and a writing system, cuneiform, originally invented to track barley owed to temples.
Sargon of Akkad fused the Sumerian cities into the world's first multi-ethnic empire around 2334 BCE. Hammurabi of Babylon (r. 1792–1750) issued a 282-clause law code on a basalt stele — punishment by reciprocity, but also written, public, and consultable. The Assyrians later perfected the siege engine; the Neo-Babylonians built the Ishtar Gate. Cyrus the Great closed the door in 539 BCE, but the cuneiform habit of accounting outlived its tablets in every ledger that came after.

Gift of the Nile

Egypt · −3100 to −30
Egypt was geography made into a state. The Nile, flooding with calendrical precision, deposited dark silt that fed a civilization for three thousand uninterrupted years — a duration that dwarfs all subsequent empires. Around 3100 BCE Narmer (or Menes) unified Upper and Lower Egypt, fathering a tradition of divine kingship that culminated in the pyramid at Giza of Khufu (c. 2560 BCE), 146 metres of dressed limestone aligned to the cardinal directions within fractions of a degree.
Egyptian astonishments include the New Kingdom's empire under Thutmose III, the monotheistic experiment of Akhenaten (r. 1353–1336), the boy-king Tutankhamun, the literary flowering of Ramses II, and the multilingual queen Cleopatra VII, who spoke Egyptian, Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew, and Latin. When the last hieroglyph was carved at Philae in 394 CE, the language slept until Champollion's 1822 decoding via the Rosetta Stone.

The Silent Civilization

Indus Valley · −2600 to −1900
Across the floodplains of the Indus and Saraswati flourished what may be the world's most thoroughly engineered ancient society. Mohenjo-daro and Harappa — discovered only in the 1920s — possessed grid-planned streets, standardised baked bricks (always 1:2:4 ratio), municipal sewage, and the Great Bath, perhaps a ritual cistern. The script appears on more than four thousand seals; nobody has read it.
The Indus people traded with Sumer (Mesopotamian texts mention the land of Meluhha), weighed in a binary-decimal system, and never built a palace or a clear ruler's tomb. Their cities were depopulated between 1900 and 1300 BCE — climate shift, river migration, and possibly disease. The mystery of an evidently complex civilization that left no readable narrative is among archaeology's deepest unanswered questions.

The civilizations of the ancient Old World did not merely succeed each other; they overlapped for millennia. Egypt and Mesopotamia were already old neighbours when the Greek polis appeared, and Rome rose while pharaohs still reigned at Alexandria.

The Polis Awakens

Greece · −800 to −146
Hellas was not a country but a network: more than a thousand independent poleis bound by language, oracle, and games. From the Homeric poems crystallised around 750 BCE emerged a culture obsessed with the agon, the public contest. Solon of Athens (594 BCE) cancelled debts and laid the groundwork for citizen government. Cleisthenes (508 BCE) invented the deme system, which we still translate, awkwardly, as democracy.
The Persian Wars (490–479 BCE), in which a coalition of squabbling city-states defeated the largest empire on earth at Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea, became Europe's founding origin myth. Then Athens flowered under Pericles, only to wreck itself in the Peloponnesian War against Sparta. Out of the rubble walked Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.

Athens · −461 to −429

In a single generation, a city of perhaps 250,000 souls produced the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides; the comedy of Aristophanes; the histories of Herodotus and Thucydides; the medicine of Hippocrates; the geometry of Hippocrates of Chios; the sculpture of Phidias; and the philosophy of Socrates. The Parthenon was finished in 438 BCE. The Athenian experiment was also slave-holding, patriarchal, and imperial — the historian's first lesson in moral complexity.

Alexander & After

Macedon · −336 to −31
Alexander III of Macedon was twenty when his father was assassinated in 336 BCE. Within twelve years he had conquered Persia, Egypt, Bactria, and reached the Beas River in Punjab; within thirteen he was dead in Babylon at thirty-two. His generals — the Diadochi — carved his empire into the Ptolemaic, Seleucid, and Antigonid kingdoms. Greek became the lingua franca from the Aegean to Afghanistan.
The resulting Hellenistic world was cosmopolitan and bookish. Alexandria's Library aimed to collect every text in the inhabited world. Eratosthenes measured the Earth's circumference to within 1% in 240 BCE. Archimedes of Syracuse formulated calculus's deepest intuitions. The Antikythera mechanism, an analogue computer for astronomical position, dates to roughly 100 BCE. Cleopatra's death at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE closed the curtain — the world spoke Greek but answered to Rome.

Republic

Rome · −509 to −27
Tradition dated the expulsion of the last Etruscan king to 509 BCE. The Roman Republic that replaced him was a peculiar machine: two annually elected consuls, a Senate of ex-magistrates, popular assemblies, and a tribunate to defend plebeians. It was designed to prevent kingship and proved, for five centuries, very good at it.
Three Punic Wars (264–146 BCE) broke Carthage and gave Rome the western Mediterranean. The conquest of Greece followed easily; the conquest of Roman politics by its own generals followed inevitably. Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Crassus, and finally Caesar, who crossed the Rubicon in 49 BCE, dragged the Republic into civil war. Caesar's grand-nephew Octavian, victor at Actium, accepted the title Augustus in 27 BCE — and the Republic, while never formally abolished, never again ruled.

Rome · 27 BCE to 476 CE
At its zenith under Trajan in 117 CE, the Roman Empire enclosed roughly five million square kilometres and 60 to 80 million people — perhaps a fifth of humanity. A Roman in Britain could write to a friend in Egypt and expect the letter to arrive. The Pax Romana (27 BCE–180 CE) is the longest peace the Mediterranean has ever known.
Diocletian's reforms (284 CE) split the empire administratively. Constantine legalised Christianity (313) and moved the capital to Constantinople (330). The Western half buckled under fiscal collapse, plague, and migration; the Eastern half — Byzantium — would persist until 1453. Edward Gibbon's "Decline and Fall" remains the great meditation on what it means for an old order to end.

Religions of the Old World

Belief
Mesopotamian religion was a treaty between humans and irritable storm-gods. Egyptian theology built death into the universe's machinery; mummification was metaphysical engineering. Greek religion, polytheistic and civic, treated the gods as one's quarrelsome, beautiful neighbours. Roman religion was administrative — the state took official auspices.
Then, in the Persian period, Zoroaster (perhaps 1200–600 BCE) preached cosmic dualism, influencing Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in turn. The Hebrew Bible took canonical shape after the Babylonian Exile (586 BCE). Buddhism arose in Magadha around 500 BCE, Confucianism in the same century in Lu. By the Augustan age, the Mediterranean swam with mystery cults — Isis, Mithras, Cybele, and a small Galilean sect called Christianity that would eventually inherit the empire that crucified its founder.

Less than one percent of ancient literature survives. We know of more than 80 plays by Sophocles; we have seven. Sappho's nine books of lyric exist as fragments. The Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest great poem in any language, was reassembled in the 19th century from twelve broken tablets dug from Nineveh's ruined library. To read antiquity is to read a salvage manifest.

Why It Still Matters

Legacy
Almost every Western institution carries an ancient signature. The senate is Roman; the tragedy is Greek; the alphabet is Phoenician via Greek and Latin; algebra is Babylonian; the calendar is Julian and then Gregorian. Even the layout of this page — letterforms, line widths, justification — is an argument with the scribes of Pergamon and Alexandria.
The deeper legacy is harder. The ancients invented the citizen, but only for a few. They invented the empire, with all its temptations. They invented the question — what is the good life — that we are still answering. To study the ancient world is to read the source code of the modern.
